São Bento Station: one of the most beautiful in the world

Considered one of the most beautiful in the world, the São Bento station in Porto was inaugurated 100 years ago, on October 5, 1916. Reason to recall in seven facts its history, its present and its future.

São Bento Station is a pearl of Porto and is even considered the living room of the city.

You may have entered it several times, but do you know everything there is to know about São Bento Station?

In 2001, it was named by the American magazine  Travel + Leisure  as one of the 16 most beautiful stations in the world, next to the neoclassical Gare du Nord (Paris), Atocha (Madrid) or the neo-gothic S. Pancras station (London). In 2014, the tile panel rehabilitation project received the Brunel Prize, one of the most prestigious in railway architecture.

The famous antechamber tiles of São Bento Station were laid in August 1915. They are about 550 square meters in surface representing historical scenes such as the wedding of D. Filipa de Lencastre with D. João I in 1386, the conquest of Ceuta and even the Valdevez Bow Tournament. It is also possible to find rural scenes such as pilgrimages and processions, vintage and cattle fairs.
